Leveraged Buyout (LBO)

In a leveraged buyout, an investor — typically a private equity fund — acquires a company using a significant proportion of debt. The financing is based essentially on the future cash flows of the target company.

LBOs make attractive equity returns possible but increase the financial risk and place considerable demands on earning power, cash conversion and planning certainty; covenant structures and interest-cover ratios are key control parameters here.
