Burn Rate
The burn rate describes a company’s monthly net cash outflow, usually in the case of start-ups before profitability has been reached. Together with the available cash, it determines the runway, i.e. the remaining reach until the next financing requirement.
Investors distinguish between gross burn (gross cash outflow) and net burn (after taking revenue into account). Both metrics are central to assessing the capital requirement, efficiency and risk of an investment.
